The Turkish parliament voted by a large margin Thursday to allow Turkish troops to make incursions into neighboring countries, if necessary, to defeat the so-called Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL). This authorization is necessary according to the Turkish constitution. Likewise, parliament voted to allow foreign troops involved in the fight against ISIL to be based on Turkish soil. This provision may allow the US to use its Incirlik air force base against the terrorist organization, which Turkey has so far disallowed.

These decisions are a significant turnabout from a month ago, when Turkey seemed reluctant to get involved. What is driving the ruling Justice and Development Party (Turkish acronym AKP) to join the American effort against ISIL?

1. Its European entanglements: Turkey has gotten enormous pressure from President Obama, French president Francois Hollande and UK PM David Cameron to join. For their part, they need the region's largest Sunni country on their side to avoid having the campaign against ISIL look like a Christian-Shiite Jihad against Sunnis. Turkey values its NATO membership and will want to fulfill obligations to other NATO members. President Tayyip Erdogan also very much wants Turkey to be accepted into the European Union, and may figure that proving Turkey's worth in fighting a Muslim extremism that seems threatening to Europe may gain him some good will in the EU. Also, Turkey fears that if the West does manage to inflict attrition on ISIL, the Baathist regime of Bashar al-Assad might benefit, but Turkey wants to see it overthrown. Being in the coalition allows Turkey to demand that pressure be kept on al-Assad to step down.

2. Turkey has backed the Syrian National Coalition and the Free Syrian Army against the Baathist government of Bashar al-Assad in Damascus.The former two organizations are dominated by a Turkey ally — the Muslim Brotherhood. (Turkey's own AKP is mildly inflected with a rhetoric of political Islam and just passed a provision allowing middle- and high school female students in state schools to veil, a practice that had been forbidden by 20th century secular governments). In the past couple of years, ISIL has consistently defeated the Free Syrian Army. Turkey wants to build back up the Free Syrian Army "moderate" opposition to both the Baath (socialist Arab nationalist) government in Damascus and extremists like ISIL.

3. Turkey is hoping to persuade the United States to impose a no-fly zone on northern Syria near Turkey. Ankara is convinced that the Syrian Baath government deliberately uses its air power against the Free Syrian Army so as to allow ISIL to win their battles. A no-fly zone would level the playing field, perhaps allowing the FSA finally to make progress and widen its territory. (In my own view, it is highly unlikely that the US will agree to patrol Syrian skies with F-18s, nor would it be legal in international law).

4. Ahu Özyurt argues that Turkey's business classes, which largely back the ruling AKP, fear negative fallout on investment and stock valuation if ISIL continues to be strong and to neighbor Turkey. She says:

"Economically, supporting the anti-ISIL alliance might be Turkey's best bet. With every mortar shell hitting Turkey on Sept. 29-30, the stock market lost points and interest rates increased. Over the weekend, Fitch will most likely downgrade the outlook for Turkey."

5. Newly elected President Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had feared taking on ISIL this past summer because it had taken hostage some 40 Turkish diplomats at the Mosul consulate. Last week, a deal was reached for the release of the consulate officials and workers. Had they been beheaded by ISIL, it would have deeply harmed the political reputation of Erdogan and Davutoglu. They would have looked helpless and not in control. But now that the hostages have been let go and are out of harm's way, Erdogan and Davutoglu no longer need fear looking like Jimmy Carter during the Iran hostage crisis.

6. Turkey has had fruitful negotiations with separatist Kurds of the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) about having the latter cease attacks in Anatolia. The leftist PKK and its Syrian branch, the YPG, is now a major guerrilla force taking on ISIL and was largely responsible for rescuing the Yazidis trapped at Sinjar. The Kurdish town of Kobane is now under siege by ISIL, and PKK leader Abdullah Ocalan is warning that if Turkey lets Kobane fall, the PKK will cut off its negotiations with Turkey. (Tens of thousands of Kurds have recently fled into Turkey from Syria in fear of ISIL). Turkey doesn't want to see the PKK and YPG strengthened, as they may be if they can claim sole credit for fighting off ISIL.

7. Tomb of the grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman Empire is in Syria, but is considered Turkish soil. It is guarded by Turkish special ops forces. If it fell to ISIL, that would make Erdogan and Davutoglu look bad, especially since they champion pride in the Ottoman, Muslim heritage of Turkey that had been viewed negatively by previous, secular Turkish governments.

The 37-year-old man was believed to have died from the virus after several days lying motionless in the Monrovia road following the refusal to treat him by local ambulance workers.

But onlookers in Liberia's Ebola-ravaged capital erupted into cheers and applause when funeral workers arrived to collect the 'corpse' and the man started moving.

The incident was accidentally captured by a team from ABC News as they shot a segment about the abandonment of Ebola victims.

In the clip, reporter Dr Richard Besser is talking about the man as he disinfected and covered with a blanket by a burial team – only for someone to shout 'He's alive!'

Obafemi Kolawole, a political associate to Chief Ganiyu Oladiran, a Peoples Democratic Party chieftain in Ilesa, was on 23 September 2014 convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment with whipping for rape.

The said Obafemi was alleged to have on 15th September 2007 raped an Action Congress of Nigeria (now All Progressives Congress) member (Tosin Ajakaye, who was pregnant as at the time of the incident) after  2007 gubernatorial election in Osun state.

Kolawole was charged beforethe State High Court sitting at Ilesa, on a two-count charge of rape and indecent assault contrary to Sections 358&360 of the Criminal Code cap 34, Vol II, Laws of Osun respectively in the case of The State Vs Obafemi Kolawole HIL\2c\2009.

The prosecution called a total of four witnesses including Tosin Ajakaye, Lawal Sikiru, Dr. A.I Isawumi and the Investigating police officer SgtOlatunji Arojo in proof of its case, while Obafemi testified in his defence and called additional four witnesses including Chief Ganiyu Oladiran, Adediran Kehinde, Adewusi Olowolodu and Olayinka Alege.

At the trial, the prosecutor narrated her ordeal that on 15th September, 2007, the convict and his cohorts, who are not police officers came to arrest her at her house at about 7:30 p.m. for an unknown offence. On sighting them and knowing their antecedent in the vicinity, she took to her heels. The convict pursued, caught up with her and beat her up. Having overpowered her, he stripped her naked and raped her.

"When my cry forhelp became unbearable, he covered her mouth. Unfortunately, those living in the same compound with me had gone to Mosque because it was the period of the Muslim fast. Thereafter he bundled me into a waiting jeep to join two other men whom I found in the same predicament as mine," she said.

She later explained that they were driven to the home of Chief Ganiyu Oladiran, a PDP chieftain, and tied to a tree where the trios were mercilessly flogged. She said Kolawole later untied her and plucked out her pubic hair, put it in her mouth to swallow with dry gin, and thereafter wentahead to insert a tin opener into her vagina and as well poured dry gin all over her body. There he raped her again.

Lawal Sikiru who testified as 'prosecutor witness 2′ corroborated her story. He said he was one of the two naked men in the waiting jeep; the other was one Gbadamosi Lasun. He stated further that he had earlier on received his own share of beating, and bundled naked into the jeep belonging to Chief Ganiyu Oladiran when Ajakaye was brought in naked. He confirmed that the trio were driven to Chief Ganiyu's house and tied to a tree where they were mercilessly beaten and the content of drygin was poured all over their body.

According to him, Ajakaye was untied by the accused who plucked out her pubic hair, inserted a tin opener into her vagina, and as well went ahead to pour dry gin in her (vagina) and then sought the consent of the Chief to have sexual intercourse with her.

The chief consented and she was taken to the boot of the jeep from where they heard her shouting forhelp.
The Medical examination conducted on Ajakaye three days after the incident at LAUTECH by Dr. Isawumi revealed that there was penetration and that the swap taken from her was full of alcohol. It was also discovered medically, that as at the time of the incident the prosecution was pregnant.

Sgt Arojo the IPO, on his own part, testified that Ajakaye and others were brought to the State Police Command Monitoring Unit at Okefia by Chief Ganiyu Oladiran who claimed that the trio whom he got arrested were the ones who assaulted him after the April 2007 Gubernatorial Election in the State.

According to him, while receiving the statements of all concerned, and conducting investigation into the matter, it was discovered that Chief Ganiyu Oladiran's captives were indeed the victims, and the supposed complainants and cohorts were the accused persons and were consequently charged to court.

Obafemi Kolawole (the convict) in his own defence, denied the allegations made against him. He admitted going to Ajakaye's house on the fateful day and arresting her, but denied stripping her naked, rather he handed her over to his colleagues, who drove her and other captives to Chief Ganiyu's house, where they were later handed over to the police.
His other witnesses also admitted that Ajakaye and others were driven to the Chief's house. Chief Ganiyu Oladiran, while testifying in defense of the accused claimed his co-accused at the Magistrate Court who arrested the trio were his sympathizers.

The presiding Judge, Honourable Justice A. B. Abdulkareem, while finding the accused guilty as charged, pronounced that although the corroboration of prosecution witness two was limited to assault, it does not corroborate penetration which is the vital ingredient necessary for rape.

However, the medical report tendered by Dr Isawumi corroborated the needed penetration and he thereafter found Kolawole guilty. The learned trial Judge held that the Prosecution Counsel Mrs Rachel Ojimi, a Chief State Counsel, in the Ministry of Justice, has been able to prove its case beyond reasonable doubt and consequently convicted the accused. He however struck out the charge of indecent assault since it carries a lesser punishment.

The imports of this judgment are as follows:
(a) Our society is still governed by laws and that notwithstanding the fact that you have perceived that some individuals have wronged you does not give you the liberty or license to take laws into your hands and forgetting the maxim 'UBI JUS IBI REMEDIUM' meaning, where there is a right, there is a concomitant remedy.
(b) That our courts are still the last hope of the common man, though justice may be slow yet its long hand will surely catch up with the offender no matter how highly or lowly placed or affiliated toa political party.
