Six years ago; I saw and met this young man Adekunle Yemi the very first time during our Interractive session for admission into University of Ibadan. He look very unkept and rough and I was wondering where is this guy from. When we got talking I got to know he happens to be one of the very privilege indigeneous indigent student from his hometown to be opportuned to study at the University. Students from his secondary school rarely make it to Tertiary Institution.
We eventually became friends and very close friends that we stayed together from 2008 till 2012 as room mates and friends. A very hard working and focused youth who has never let his background put his back on the ground. The financial challenge of studying Pharmacy was very though on him. As a matter of fact, coming to UI to study was a step of faith- no source of income either from parent or any other source. (Am sorry Yemi, I have to say this); Yemi had to do Commercial motorbiking services (Okada) to raise money to pay his school fee. During Sessional breaks when all of us will be enjoying home; Yemi is working so hard to raise the money he will need to meet his academic needs for the whole new session; so within less than 3 months of sessional break,
Yemi had to raise more than N60,000 to pay school fee, accommodation and all financial needs for the new session. Eac time we resume the session; you will notice his red eye and fading skin. There are times he got injured on Okada (Motorcycle); there have been time we had to deal with Chest pain and cough when ever we resume. This was how Yemi was surviving till when we got to 300 level that we had to do Industrial trainning. Most Pharmacies rarely pay during IT, so the challenge of raising School fee for 400 level and beyound became so serious. But along the line, God raised help and moreover he got an Okada he leased out too. That was how Yemi, an indigent Indigenous youth from a very humble background survived the financial challenges of having quality tertiary education at Nigeria First and best University.
Today Yemi is a Pharmacist and (I've got to say this); He finished with a First Class degree. I mean he had First Class in Pharmacy. If you know how tedious Pharmacy education is; you will want to appreciate that.
Yemi; perhaps is the first person from his more than 40 years old Secondary school to study Pharmacy..and one of the very few privilege ones to be fortunate to attend and graduate from University.
Today am celebrating the faithfulness of God over the life of Pharm. Yemi. His life is a motivation to me and also to us at BNI. He's a God fearing youth that shows high level of committment to the things of God. Yemi has shown to everyone and anyone who by reason of circumstances have given up on themselves by reason of their respective background; you see; things will never get better, unless we do something to make it better.
The inspiring story of Pharm. Yemi is the foundational motivation for BNI's Quality Education for All Project (QUEFA Project) which he is the Facilitator. Yemi believes that there are several students in the village that are non-responsive to education because they never believe they could make any sense of it becuse they cann't even afford it in the first place. His passion for the QUEFA Project is to get rural students to believe in education as a means to their development and transformation.
Today, October 3rd; Pharm Yemi Adekunle becomes a year older today. I pray that the Lord that has brought you thus far will see you through. No power of darkness and hell will prevail over you; Your life is hidden in God with Christ.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY BRO.
Please help me appreciate the faithfulness of God upon the life of this young man by wishing him a happy birthday; and also supporting IN ANY WAY YOU CAN, his passion to reach out to students in the villages.
Thanks and God bless you all.
