Alhaji Shehu Musa Aljan does not belong to any security agency but he has shocked and surprised citizens of Plateau state with his unconventional means of arresting those criminals giving them sleepless nights and handing them over to Special Task Force on Jos crisis (STF).

The Kaduna State born man who grew up in Bauchi state reveals his name, Aljan, in Hausa, means spirit.

Aljan tells The Sun in this interview that by merely looking at a criminal, he could identify and disarm him and considering the current insecurity facing the country, this is his own way of helping to save the country from criminals.

Read his story below:

On if how long he has been doing the job: For long, I have been going into the hinterlands to track down those causing trouble for the country, yet nobody has ever paid me a kobo for the job. Even the military has not been doing the job I am doing for the country. I go on my own to bring armed robbers to them. I do not go with any of their men to effect arrest. I go with men under me to places that the security forces cannot penetrate and bring them out for law to take its course. We know how we smoke them out of their hideouts.

On his operation in Plateau State: The head of the Special Task Force on Jos crisis (STF) in Plateau is hard working, a nice person. We work hand in hand. When I go out on our operations in the night, he keeps awake till we are through with the operation. I have no relationship with the government of Plateau State. I am not into politics. But the state government is not offended by what I am doing here because it wants peace.

Since I started working in Plateau, I have arrested about 28 people with their ammunition and stolen cattle. They confessed that they are not working alone but are being hired by people to commit all these atrocities. It is not only the Fulani doing all these destructions. They are of different tribes working together in teams. There are Fulani, Berom and (Yargan) Taroh, all working together to do the attacks. They have people they report to. After carrying out successful operations, they have their agents and sponsors who receive and sell all the loot.

It not true that some of those arrested are not thieves but innocent cattle owners going about with their cows in the bush. From their shoes, caps or anything on them, we can detect them. I do not need to be told who the assailants are before I know them.

By mere seeing them I know who they are. If the Nigerian government wants peace, let it enter into alliance with those of us using traditional methods to detect criminals. Our groups exist in different parts of the country. By so doing, all these attacks would be minimized. Money is being wasted unnecessarily in funding soldiers and those of us that have our own traditional ways of solving these problems are dying of hunger. I can boldly say that what I have done in two months, the security men have not done in the last 12 years. There is someone they have been looking for in the past six years, I was the one that went and arrested him. I arrested him in Riyom. I have arrested many, close to 30. I first arrested 16. Then I brought five. And recently, I arrested six with their ammunition.

I was not employed by the Plateau State government to do this work. I have never sat with Governor Jang. I do not know him and he does not know me. But with what we have done, all the arrests we have made of different tribes, everyone is appreciating us.

People can see the arrest I am making, so no one can say I am not working. If there is any need for me, government can call me if they want. I am a Nigerian and ready to serve anytime. It is God that would reward me. If not for the love of the people, I will not be doing this job. I learnt the job from our boss, the late Lawal in Mambilla in Taraba State. For months, we will be in the bush with our boss getting trained.

Aljan who says he's not persecuting any religion says all he does and he is after is arresting criminals as he had arrested about 17 armed robbers with their ammunitions in Kaduna state.

Djokovic Maintains Australian Open Supremacy With 5th Title

Novak Djokovic beat Andy Murray 7-6(5) 6-7(4) 6-3 6-0 on Sunday to win a record fifth Australian Open title in the professional era and consign the Scot to further grand slam pain.

The opening two sets saw a very competitive duel but after taking a 2-0 lead in the third set, Murray crumbled under the Serb's pressure to lose 12 of the last 13 games as Djokovic closed out an emphatic win at the Rod Laver Arena.

Top seed Djokovic sealed the victory on the second match-point, rushing to the net with a searing approach shot that Murray could only dump into the net.

The steely-eyed Serb roared in triumph and went to his player's box to share the win with his team before tearing off his shirt and throwing it into the crowd.

"Tough luck tonight. You are a great competitor," Djokovic, clasping the Norman Brookes Challenge Cup, said to Murray at the trophy ceremony.

"You fight a lot, and I want to congratulate your team and wish you all the best in the rest of the season. I will also congratulate you and Kim on your engagement, and I wish you a wonderful wedding."

The loss continued Murray's heartbreak, where he has now lost four major finals, including three to his friend and fellow 27-year-old Djokovic.

"I would like congratulate Novak on his fifth Australian Open," Murray said. "Fantastic, and incredible record, and thoroughly deserved.

"I will try to come back next year, and hopefully have a slightly different outcome in the final."

Australian Open Supremacy

Djokovic has now won four out of the last five trophies at Melbourne Park, after winning a hat-trick from 2011-13 and his first grand slam title in Australia in 2008.

The only man to win more Australian titles than Djokovic is Roy Emerson, who won six in the 1960s when the grand slams were restricted to amateur players and the Australian Open was played on grass at different cities all over the country.

South Sudan's Warring Sides Sign Another Ceasefire Deal

South Sudanese President, Salva Kiir and rebel commander, Riek Machar have signed a ceasefire deal on Monday, edging them closer to a final agreement to end a 15-month conflict that has ravaged the world's newest country, mediators said.

African diplomatic sources said that the deal which is yet to be made public, sets out how the two leaders would share power once they
formed an interim government.

It is proposed Salva Kiir would remain President while Riek Machar would emerge as the Vice President.

The warring sides had also agreed to abide by a ceasefire deal that was earlier signed in January 2014 but violated.

The rebels, however, said many more details need to be ironed out before the deal can be labeled a "power-sharing" agreement.

Regional diplomats had warned the warring sides that if they could not come up with a new deal, sanctions would be imposed on them.

The chief mediator of the East African IGAD bloc, Seyoum Mesfin, said that the two leaders had agreed to resume talks on February 20.

"(Those talks) would be final and that would lead them into concluding a comprehensive agreement to end the crisis in South Sudan," Mesfin told reporters minutes before Kiir and Machar signed the latest peace deal.

Several previous peace deals and ceasefires that accompanied the agreements had been broken.

The conflict in South Sudan erupted in December 2013 and has rumbled on since then despite several commitments by Kiir and Machar to stop the violence.

It was also reported that more than 10,000 people have been killed, about 1.5 million people have been rendered homeless and many in the oil-producing nation of about 11 million people could not get enough food to eat.

South Sudan is Africa's newest nation and one of its poorest.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Director of Strategy, Dele Alake, has said that the party's presidential candidate, General Muhammadu Buhari, would not attend the presidential debate organised by Channels Television, Arise TV and NPAN.

Mr Alake made this declaration on Channels Television while appearing as a guest on the flagship breakfast programme, Sunrise daily.

Alake accused some Nigerian media organisations of being compromised.

He said that he could not vouch for the independence of some of the organisers of the debate.

Alake, who was once the Commissioner for Information and Strategy in Lagos State between 1999 – 2007, however, would not disclose those he claimed have been compromised.

The Jonathan/Sambo 2015 Presidential Campaign Organisation has, however, informed the organisers that President Jonathan "has accepted to participate in the debate."

Large Scale Trials Of Ebola Experimental Vaccine In Liberia

The first large-scale trials of an experimental vaccine against Ebola are due to begin in Liberia.

The potentially preventative medicine was taken under strict security to a secret location in the West African country.

Scientists aim to immunise 30,000 volunteers, including front-line health workers.

More than 8,500 people have died in the Ebola outbreak, most of whom are from Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone.

The total number of reported cases is more than 21,000. In Liberia alone, more than 3,600 people have died from the disease.

The trial beginning on Monday would involve injecting a small amount of the Ebola virus into volunteers in order to trick the body into producing an immune response.

The vaccine is still experimental and it is not clear whether it will definitely provide protection against Ebola.
