Ebola winning the race, says UN official Anthony Banbury

Ebola winning the race, says UN official Anthony Banbury

(NEW YORK, U.S)

The UN's Ebola mission chief says the world is falling behind in the race to contain the virus, with thousands of new cases predicted by December.

"It is running faster than us, and it is winning the race," Anthony Banbury told the UN Security Council.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says 4,447 people have died from the outbreak, mainly in West Africa.

Meanwhile, a second health worker in the US state of Texas has become infected with the virus.

Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea have been hardest hit by the epidemic, which began in December 2013 but was confirmed only in March.

In other developments:
Liberia's transport minister has gone into quarantine after the death of her personal driver from the virus
Guinea's president has called upon the country's retired doctors to help out in the fight against Ebola
A football player for Sierra Leone's national team says his team-mates have been stigmatised and humiliated as result of the Ebola outbreak

US President Barack Obama said on Tuesday that "the world as a whole is not doing enough" to contain the Ebola threat.

He will discuss the Ebola crisis in a video conference on Wednesday with British, French, German and Italian leaders, the White House says.

Mr Banbury issued a stern warning on Tuesday, telling the UN Security Council by video-link from West Africa that if Ebola was not stopped now, the world would "face an entirely unprecedented situation for which we do not have a plan".

He called for more money to build treatment centres and for more medical personnel to staff them.

It follows the WHO's latest projections suggesting the infection rate could reach 5,000 to 10,000 new cases a week within two months if global efforts to combat the spread of infection were not stepped up.

There have been 8,914 cases overall, including the fatal cases, and the WHO says it expects this number to top 9,000 by the end of the week.

The WHO estimates its figures by taking the numbers of confirmed cases and multiplying them – from Guinea by 1.5, from Sierra Leone by 2 and from Liberia by 2.5 – to account for under-reporting.

WHO assistant director-general Bruce Aylward said on Tuesday that the rate of infections appeared to be slowing in the "historic epicentre" of the outbreak, but warned that it was too early to read this as success.

In the US state of Texas, a second health worker has tested positive for Ebola. The worker's identity has not been revealed but the person is said to have cared for a Liberian man, Thomas Duncan, who later died from the virus.

The first health worker to have been infected in Texas, 26-year-old Nina Pham, is receiving treatment. The female nurse also contracted the disease after treating Mr Duncan, who was the first person to be diagnosed with the virus on US soil.

Her colleagues at a Dallas hospital say they worked without adequate protective clothing and received little guidance on preventing the spread of the virus.

The head of the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC), Thomas Frieden, has said there had been a breach of protocol by health workers that led to Ms Pham becoming infected.

However, the head of the national nurses union, Roseann DeMoro, questioned this. "The CDC is saying that protocols were breached, but the nurses are saying there were no protocols," she told reporters.

Doctors at the Health Presbyterian hospital said Ms Pham was in good condition on Tuesday.

Fans divided over Keshi

Fans divided over Keshi

Following the Super Eagles win over Sudan last night, thousands of fans, who stormed the Abuja National Stadium were divided over the future of Stephen Keshi as the team's coach. While some fans carried placard demanding for his sack, others demonstrated in favour of his continued stay.

Before the game got under way, the fans who turned out in large numbers expressed their disappointment by booing the players and pelting them with sachet water when they initially failed to impress.

Displaying placards with descriptions like 'Keshi must go' Mikel is a super flop to Nigerians', 'Keshi must bring back Ike Uche and Super' 'Eagles must qualify', the fans registered their anger each time Keshi stood to give instructions to the players.

It was not only keshi that was at the receiving end , as Mikel and others were booed on several occasion. Although Mikel showed few flashes that almost won the fans over, but they were agitated when the team failed to come in the first 20 minutes of the game, resulting in the usual chant, 'all we are saying, give us one goal'.

Obama urges 'more aggressive' Ebola fight

Obama urges 'more aggressive' Ebola fight
Fears of a US Ebola epidemic are spreading after it was revealed an Ebola-infected nurse flew on a commercial flight. Meanwhile, President Obama has called for increased urgency in the global fight against the disease.

United States President Barack Obama pledged Wednesday to combat the Ebola outbreak in a "much more aggressive way," highlighting an increased sense of urgency regarding the spread of the disease and calling on the world to more vigorously fight the epidemic in West Africa.

Obama's comments came after it emerged on Wednesday that a second US ebola patient had taken a domestic flight on a commercial airliner, a day before testing positive for the virus, widening fears the disease could spread in the US.

"We want a rapid response team, a SWAT team essentially, from the CDC to be on the ground as quickly as possible, hopefully within 24 hours, so that they are taking the local hospital step by step through what needs to be done," Obama said.

Obama, who canceled a Thursday political trip to monitor the government's ebola response, also urged world leaders to fight the spread of the disease in hardest-hit West Africa.

"We are going to have to make sure that we do not lose sight of the importance of the international response to what is taking place in West Africa," Obama said. Earlier the US President called his counteparts in Britain, France, Germany, and Italy in order to better coordinate the global response to the outbreak.

"Leaders agreed that this was the most serious international public health emergency in recent years and that the international community needed to do much more and faster," British Prime Minister David Cameron's office said.

Ebola has hit the West African Nation of Liberia particularly hard

To this end, the United Nations Security Council issued a statement on Wednesday calling for the world to "dramatically expand the provision of resources and financial and material assistance" to West Africa.

Infected nurse flew commercial flight

Meanwhile, in an alarming turn, the CDC his issued an alert for all passengers who flew on an October 13 flight from Cleveland to Texas after it emerged a nurse who had tested
positive for ebola was on board.

Health authorities wish to interview 132 people who flew one the flight with the nurse, identified as 29-year-old Amber Joy Vinson.

Thomas Frieden, Chief of the CDC said the case was "very concerning," as health workers who have worked in close proximity to Ebola patients have been warned not to use public transportation.

"She was in a group of individuals known to have exposure to Ebola. She should not have traveled on a commercial airline," Frieden said of Vinson.

"The investigation is identifying additional health care workers who will be very closely monitored and we are planning for the possibility of additional cases in the coming days."

Vinson is the second woman to become infected after treating a Liberian Ebola partient, Thomas Eric Duncan, who died of the disease on October 8.

Travel restrictions

United States Speaker of the House John Boehner announced on Wednesday that the US should consider a temporary travel ban on flights from Ebola-afflicted countries.

"A temporary ban on travel to the United States from countries afflicted with the virus is something that the president should absolutely consider along with any other appropriate actions as doubts about the security of our air travel systems grow," Boehner said in a statement.

Two nurses contracted Ebola after treating a Liberian patient at a Dallas hospital

Airports in the United States, Britain and Canada have announced enhanced screening protocols for passengers traveling from West Africa. France announced as well that it would also begin carrying out health checks at airports.

The current Ebola outbreak, the worst on record, has claimed nearly 4500 lives according to the World Health Organization.

Multiple US airstrikes on "Islamic State" targets

Multiple US airstrikes on "Islamic State" targets
The US military says multiple airstrikes have been carried out on "Islamic State" (IS) targets in Syria and Iraq. Activists say "small advances" have been made by Kurdish fighters defending the Syrian town of Kobani.

The US military's Central Command said US aircraft carried out 18 airstrikes on "Islamic State" (IS) positions near the besieged Syrian border town of Kobani on Tuesday and Wednesday.

US officials said several rebel positions were destroyed and 16 buildings, occupied by the militants, were hit in this latest operation to stop the advance of the IS group.

A further five strikes were carried out against IS targets in Iraq.

Battle for Kobani

In a statement released on Wednesday, the US Central Command said the bombing raids near Kobani were to support besieged Kurdish militia in the region.

Activists and the authorities reported that Kurdish fighters had made small advances following clashes with IS extremists in and around Kobani just hours after the US-led airstrikes.

Earlier, the Pentagon said 21 airstrikes against IS targets near Kobani overnight Monday marked the largest number in the region in a 24-hour period since the air campaign began in Syria last month.

US-Turkey relations strained

F-16 fighter jets took part in a raid on PKK targets inside Turkey's borders, October 13, 2014.

On Monday, Turkey launched airstrikes against Kurdish rebels inside its borders, defying calls from Washington to instead focus on the IS.

The strikes were the first against Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) targets since a March 2013 ceasefire.

There had been increasing tension between Turkey and the PKK over Ankara's refusal to allow Turkish Kurds to leave the country to defend Kobani.

The fresh conflict between Ankara and the PKK also highlights the complicated position Turkey faces as it negotiates its role with the US and NATO allies fighting the IS.

The strikes came ahead of an October 15 deadline set by PKK leader, Abdullah Ocalan, for a roadmap to salvage the fragile peace process.

Hong Kong government "ready for talks" with pro-demcracy movement

Hong Kong government "ready for talks" with pro-demcracy movement
After two days of some of the worst violence seen between students and police in Hong Kong, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying says he is "ready for talks." Last week, the government pulled out of similar discussions.

Hong Kong's administrator, Chief Executive Leung Chun-ying (pictured above), announced on Thursday that he was ready to open talks with student leaders.

Just a week ago, his government pulled out of similar discussions with representatives of the pro-democracy movement that had been aimed at defusing tensions.

"Over the last few days, including this morning through third parties, we expressed a wish to the students that we would like to start a dialogue to discuss universal suffrage as soon as we can and hopefully within the following week," Leung told reporters.

Since the protests began two weeks ago, neither Beijing nor the Hong Kong authorities have made any concessions to the pro-democracy movement.

Leung says he is ready for talks

'Excessive force'

Leung's announcement on Thursday followed two days of increased violence between students and police in Hong Kong.

According to eyewitness and media reports, police used excessive force and beat up protesters in their attempts to clear a tunnel occupied by activists.

'Genuine' universal suffrage sought

Protests broke out in the semi-autonomous region almost three weeks ago after Beijing insisted that candidates standing for election as Hong Kong's next leader in 2017 would be vetted by a loyalist committee. Many Hong Kongers, however, are demanding "genuine" universal suffrage.

In a statement last Sunday, Leung said there was "almost zero chance" that Beijing would change its rules for the 2017 vote.

It remains unclear whether Hong Kong's student protests will be discussed at the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM), which takes place Thursday in the Italian city of Milan.

Kogi Students Now Singing 'Ebola Anthem' ...As Schools Get Kits
Students in Kogi state are singing an Ebola-inspired anthem in a government bid to encourage personal hygiene and increase public awareness about the killer virus.

In an unconventional approach to tackling the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) primary and Secondary school students in Kogi state are singing an Ebola anthem composed for them by the Ministry of Education.

According to the state Commissioner for Education, Dr. Agnes Okai, the Ebola Anthem is meant to educate students on the dangers of the EVD in order to check its spread.

"Ebola Virus Disease, the deadliest in history, but we will push you out by taking precaution, by constant washing of hands with water and soap, and keeping environment clean; together we shall push you out," part of the anthem read.

Okai believes that the song will promote improved personal hygiene among students.

Over 3000 schools in the state were also given EVD prevention materials.

The items distributed include plastic buckets with tap, scan thermometers, liquid soap and protective gear.

The Commissioner also revealed that over 7000 teaching and non-teaching staff have been trained to administer the items in the public and private schools in the state.
