Obanikoro Allegedly Confessed He Was Present At Ekiti Rigging Meeting

Contrary to earlier denials, embattled ministerial nominee, Musiliu Obanikoro, has confessed to several Senators in Abuja that he did participate in an election-eve meeting in Ekiti in June 2014 in which a group of politicians and government ministers met with a Nigerian army general to rig the governorship election in favor of Ayodele Fayose, the candidate of the People's Democratic Party (PDP).

The meeting, which is now known as "Ekitigate", was secretly taped by an army captain who was subsequently forced to flee for his life.

Despite the scandal, President Jonathan went ahead to nominate Obanikoro into his cabinet for the second time, and the nominee is lobbying the Senators to give him a pass during his upcoming nomination hearing. It is in the process that he has confessed to some of them that he was indeed present at the rigging meeting in Akure, on behalf of the President, to ensure that everything went smoothly.

Obanikoro's story is that he was simply making "peace" between the army and Ayo Fayose at the meeting, claiming that he was not party to any conversation about rigging. On the contrary, Obanikoro, who was at the time junior Minister for Defence, is overheard clearly on the tape bragging about the authority granted him by President Jonathan.

Prior to admitting his involvement to the Senators, the former minister met with President Jonathan to discuss the tape and his role. A presidency source said Obanikoro told President Jonathan he was present at the meeting but that a part of the audio-recording was "doctored".

They said President Jonathan had called him to the meeting to discuss how to mitigate the damage created by the leaked tape. He told the Senators categorically that it was Jonathan himself who had sent him to Ekiti to help Fayose win the election. On the tape, Obanikoro says, at least twice, that he is on a "mission" for the President.

He also reportedly told President Jonathan at their meeting that he had asked his US-based lawyers to do a separate voice analysis of the tape and that the lawyers came back with "proof" that certain aspects of the tape had been doctored by SaharaReporters to make the regime look bad. Counting on that assurance, President Jonathan told a team of reporters from the Wall Street Journal during an interview that the tapes were not real and that he would not investigate the incident.

Obanikoro also told President Jonathan that his US-based lawyers had assured him that they could file some cases against SaharaReporters in the US to "teach SaharaReporters and its publisher, Omoyele Sowore" a lesson. He explained to the president that with enough financial support, his lawyers would file the case and also employ private detectives to take down SaharaReporters. President Jonathan reportedly nodded at the idea, and asked Obanikoro not to worry.

Following that meeting, the former Minister began a series of legal threats last week claiming to have sued SaharaReporters, as well as The Punch newspaper and Premium Times, both in Lagos. Up until now, those newspapers are yet to be served copies of the lawsuit.

On Tuesday night, Obanikoro, who is also a US citizen, assured some of the Senators that his US lawyers had already filed the libel suit against SaharaReporters in New York.

On Wednesday, Obanikoro deployed a small rented a crowd of protesters to hold placards in front of the National Assembly to denounce the All Progressives Congress.

It is to be noted that two other key participants at the meeting, Police Minister Jelili Adesiyan and Ayo Fayose, the beneficiary of the Ekiti governorship rigging, have admitted that they were at the meeting that was taped by the army captain.

For Obanikoro's role in the rigging of the election, APC has advocated his being banned from holding any public office, and asked the Senate not to confirm him. Mr. Jonathan is known to have re-nominated Obanikoro as his prize for stepping down from the PDP governorship race in Lagos.

Thousands marched through Burundi's capital today in one of the largest demonstrations in recent years after the release of a popular journalist and government critic from jail, months ahead of key elections. Vast crowds singing and dancing filled the streets of Bujumbura a day after Bob Rugurika, director of the popular independent African Public Radio (RPA), was released from prison on bail.

There was no official figure for how many people who took to the streets, but residents said the mass rally of tens of thousands was the largest they could remember.

Rugurika was jailed for "complicity" in the murder of three Italian nuns, after interviewing one of the men who claimed he partook in the killing of the nuns, but Police say they have a different report, and arrested the popular journalist.

His arrest however sparked protests by civil rights activists and fellow journalists, who accused the government of doing all it can to sideline political challengers ahead of elections in May and June, including arrests, harassment and a clampdown on free speech.

But last year Yaken left home, abandoning his fitness job that he had dreamt will bring him wealth and pretty women to join ISIS men on Syria battle field. His parents are heartbroken and other family members wonder why he would leave his dreams behind to join such a group.

During the last Ramadan in July, Yaken took to his twitter page where he posted a photograph of himself kneeling beside a decapitated corpse on the killing fields of Syria, with the caption "Surely, the holiday won't be complete without a picture with one of the dogs", referring to the corpse he knelt beside.

I Can't Promise Polls Will Hold In March & April- Jega

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof Attahiru Jega, has said he cannot guarantee if elections will hold in March or not, stating that major part of it still has to do with the issue of security, which only the Military can clarify. Jega appeared before the Senate yesterday and when asked by the Minority Leader, Senator George Akume, to give a clear assurance about the dates of the elections, Jega said;

"I think it is a very difficult question to answer. I have said consistently that there are things under the control of electoral commission and there are things that are not under the control of electoral commission. For things that are under our control, I can give definite and categorical assurances. On what is not under our control, it is futile, it is fruitless and useless to give a definite guarantee on them. I think that question should be directed appropriately. The questions of security, I will leave it, I don't think I am competent to answer it sufficiently."

When asked what his response would be if the security agencies requested a further delay, Jega said doing so would be illegal.

"Every Nigerian knows we want elections to hold… within a constitutional time frame. The security agencies are (made up of) patriotic Nigerians. Let's give them the benefit of the doubt. We should be fair also to the military. Soldiers are also patriotic Nigerians. I don't see how anybody will contemplate any extension beyond these six weeks. There is no constitutional grounds upon which you can do that. For us, we work by the constitution, by the law. That is what is guiding us and we should all put the interest of the nation at heart. The human factor is always significant, it is always important but we believe that working together with security and other stakeholders, we should be able to prevent negative human intervention that can create problems.

"I kept saying consistently that INEC is not a security organisation. We are an election management body; so we rely a lot on security to be able to ensure that things are done well and that there is no disruption of the electoral process.

"We have been working very closely with the inter agencies consultative committee on election security and that is why for us, if the service chiefs say that we can't guarantee security, give us more time, what is the alternative security arrangements ?

"If we consulted with the stakeholders and we cannot find an answer, what happens? We are going to use close to 700, 000 ad hoc staff. We can't send people to the field in that kind of a situation.

"Our prayer is that in the next six weeks, there will be significant improvement in the security situation for us to hold the elections all over this country in a very secure environment.

"There are certain questions that we are not really competent to answer. Certain questions should be directed to the military; they can answer them better."

Leading Soft Sell Publisher, Dada Eriye Is Dead

BRAVO Magazine publisher Victor Dada Ariye has passed on. Mr Ariye was said to have been involved in a fire accident while trying to fuel his generator around 11pm on Saturday, February 14^th at home, when the generator caught fire. He was seriously injured and was rushed to Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) where his family members were advised to take him to Igbobi Orthopaedic Hospital, Lagos. At Igbobi, the nurses said they had just fumigated the hospital, and so won't be able to admit him. His family had top rush him back to LUTH, by then, it was around 2am. It was alleged that LUTH demanded the sum of N250,000 before anything could be done. His families pleaded and said they will make the money available as the next morning was a Sunday morning and banks won't be opened, but the hospital will receive the money first thing Monday morning.

He was however admitted after hours of begging nurses on duty that night. Sadly, Mr Ariye was already dying slowly and was placed on life support at the hospital. And just today, four days after his friends have announced his death. May his soul rest in peace.
