About 30 Boko Haram fighters executed in battle to succeed Abubakar Shekau

OVER 30 Boko Haram insurgents were killed in an internal squabble yesterday as they fought a bitter succession battle to determine who takes over from Sheikh Abubakar Shekau as the sect's leader.

After a fierce battle with the Nigerian Army in Kodunga in Borno State on September 17, Boko Haram suffered heavy casualties, with their leader Sheikh Shekau shot dead. During the battle, over 200 fighters were killed and a lot of their equipment, including armoured personnel carriers was seized, leading to the remnants of the Boko Haram army scattering in different directions.

Despite about 150 of the terrorists surrendering to the Nigerian military and a further 300 fleeing to neighbouring Cameroon, some of them are trying to regroup. Yesterday, they met in Madagali in Adamawa State to determine who should succeed Shekau but the selection process ended up getting very bloody.

Some residents in the area said trouble started when some of the sect members suggested they should agree a ceasefire with the federal government and hand over their weapons. With this already diving the terrorist commanders, things got worse when they came to the vexed issue of who should be their new leader.

One local resident said: "From what we learnt, 30 Boko Haram fighters have been killed in Madagali town after a fight ensued between them over whether to surrender their weapons. They just kept shooting themselves freely."

Madagali is one of the towns still said to still be under Bioko Haram control, alongside Gulak, Shuwa and Michika. A local government headquarters, Madagali has been turned into their operational headquarters in Adamawa State.

.... The Forbidden Fruits After that day, the boys never went to the orange tree again and the story that it was a forbidden fruit was retold and everyone believed it, even the four boys. Though they knew it was not the forbidden fruits of the Bible but Mr. Jacob's forbidden fruits. Garba was angry when he learnt that it was Bawa who had told on him. They all began to avoid Bawa. But all these had been over thirty-five years ago. They grown and become men. Garba had turned out to be the star of them all, having excelled in school and had gone to Lagos and then to England. He returned to Dongongari and settled down. Now all the boys who went to the St. Aquinas now have children. But they all still sit together on weekends and talk of the past. Mr. Jacob and the forbidden fruits was always an exciting topic and they would laugh. "Only God know where the white master is today," Sule would say with nostalgia. "Perhaps long dead and buried," Tanko would say. "But he was a terror," Bawa reminded. He had succeeded. his father as the tobacco merchant in ,Jogongan even though he was once a banker. Garba would laugh. "Come to think of it, he was a good man. The lesson of the forbidden fruits was that of obedience. We ought to have obeyed him as our elder and teacher," he said: They all agreed with him. The End ....
